Green Thumbs series takes virtual look at spiders

Laurel Moulton presents over Zoom

PORT ANGELES — Laurel Moulton, Clallam County Master Gardeners program coordinator, looks to bring spiders into the spotlight via Zoom from noon to 1 p.m. today as part of the Green Thumbs Garden Tips education series.

Watch Moulton’s talk by going to extension.wsu.edu/clallam. Attendees are encouraged to log in early to ensure speaker volume is adequate and microphone is muted.

Moulton will help the audience learn to identify different types of spiders and their relatives that can be found around local homes and landscapes, and teach about their natural history.

Poisonous spiders will be shown, and the likelihood of running into them discussed.

Moulton said she hopes audience members will come away with a new respect (if not love) for the creatures, a better understanding of their role in the natural environment, and impact they have on people’s lives.

Moulton has been a Master Gardener since 2006 and received her master’s degree in Horticulture with a minor in entomology from Oregon State University in 2011. She said she’s been fascinated by spiders her whole life and enjoys encouraging appreciation of spiders and other insects.

The Green Thumbs Garden Tips education series is sponsored by WSU Clallam County Master Gardeners and provides home gardeners with education on research-based sustainable garden practices in Clallam County. Live streaming presentations are available from noon to 1 p.m. the second and fourth Thursday each month through October; in November, December and January, one program is offered.
