Forest management topic of Green Thumbs presentation

PORT ANGELES — Are you a landowner with a forested property? Check out the next Green Thumb Gardening Tips presentation, “Forest Management for Landowners” with forestry expert Norm Schaff, set for noon-1 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 25 on Zoom.

Get the link at extension.wsu.edu/clallam/master-gardener-calendar. Or, join by phone by calling 253-215-8782 (meeting ID 920 0799 1742, passcode 709395).

Are Douglas firs better for your property than Western red cedars or big leaf maples? Do you really need so many alders on your land?

Schaff will talk about the common conditions, benefits and risks of living in a Clallam County area forest environment.

He will discuss amenities and inconveniences in evaluating your own forest including assessing tree and forest health, and common diseases and pests.

He will also talk about the regulatory environment — what landowners must do to maintain their forests as well as management practices that may be utilized in your forest.

“Landowners will become familiar with the most suitable tree species for the foothills area, identify common problems and potential solutions, learn about potential management practices to maintain or improve forest health,” Schaff said, “and become informed about the forest practice regulations that must be followed.

Schaff is a professional forester with 50 years of experience in western Washington, who currently advises private clients on management of their property.

He is the owner of NorthStar Forestry LLC, providing consulting forestry services for clients in Washington state. NorthStar Forestry was founded in 2018 upon his retirement from full-time employment as President of Merrill & Ring, Inc.

He previously managed all Merrill & Ring timberlands in the U.S., Canada and New Zealand.

He earned his forestry degree from Washington State University in 1973 and obtained an master’s degree in business administration in 1998 from the University of Washington’s Executive MBA program.

Before coming to Merrill & Ring in 1993, Schaff was timberlands manager for Crown Pacific, Limited.

He is an active member of the Society of American Foresters and served as state chair, and was recognized in 1986 as Forester of the Year and Fellow in 2012.

Sponsored by WSU Clallam County Master Gardeners, the Green Thumbs Garden Tips education series is offered on the second and fourth Thursday each month through October (in November, December and January, one program is offered).

Scheduled presentations are subject to change.
