Flamingos flock to Sequim to help Class of 2022

Funds benefit safe and sober graduation party

SEQUIM — Pink unofficially joins purple and gold as Sequim High School’s colors as the senior class looks to raise funds through flamingo flocking in the next month and a half.

Most evenings over the next seven weeks, six teams will place up to four sets each of flamingos on the lawns of homes and businesses as they seek financial support for the annual Sequim Graduation Party.

The graduates’ safe-and-sober celebration will be held this year at Sequim Community Church on June 10.

Karen McKeown, parent organizer for the flamingo project, said students hope to have all of the approximately 210 graduating seniors participate in the all-night event that includes music, games and prizes.

Grad night organizers set a $50,000 goal.

They had raised about $8,000 so far, McKeown said earlier this week.

In past years, parents have raised between $10,000 and $15,000 through flamingo flocking, she said, and they hope to raise more than that for the Class of 2022.

Flocking began on March 6 with students recruited via email, lunch signups and word of mouth.

Underclassmen are welcome to sign up so long as a 12th-grader is on their team, McKeown said.

How it works

Each flamingo flock comes with a pouch with a suggested $35 donation for removal, and a $10 option to move the flock somewhere of your choosing, and another $10 to not be flocked again.

A zipped pouch accompanies each flock with instructions.

Those simply looking to support the class of 2022 can send checks to: Sequim Graduation Party, P.O. Box 4, Carlsborg WA 98324.

Donations are also welcome via Venmo (@shsseniorparty2022) and PayPal (shssenior party2022@gmail.com).

A golf tournament benefiting the class is also scheduled for May 6 at The Cedars at Dungeness.
