SEQUIM — The first weekend of the 23rd edition of the Tour De Dungeness, Sequim’s premier annual bicycle racing event, has been canceled and the second weekend is in doubt.
The tour was slated for two Saturdays — this coming Saturday and March 21 — with an expected field of 400-450 riders from across the Puget Sound region and Eastern Washington.
“A lot of the volunteers have decided not to come” because of concerns about COVID-19, said local co-ordinator Mike Van Doren.
“You can’t run a race without volunteers.”
The second weekend may also be canceled, he said.
“It’s not looking good for next week, but we won’t know until Tuesday or so,” he added.
If that weekend doesn’t come off, then the race probably will be rescheduled for the summer.
In the race, riders — most of whom are from out of the area — compete in multiple categories on a 12-mile course that includes Lotzgesell, Cays, East Anderson, Sequim-Dungeness Way, Woodcock and Kitchen-Dick roads.
