As part of the Summer Reading Program, North Olympic Library System is hosting a weekly Discovery Club geared toward youths in grades K-5, their families and caregivers.
Discovery Club is held outside once weekly at each of the public libraries that North Olympic Library System oversees — in Port Angeles, Sequim, Forks and Clallam Bay — from Tuesday through Aug. 5.
No registration is needed. Children must be accompanied by an adult. Meet in the field behind the Sequim Library, 630 N. Sequim Ave,. at 10:30 a.m. Fridays. In Forks, join library staff at Tillicum Park at 3 p.m. Tuesdays. The Port Angeles Library will conduct the club outside of children’s area at 3 p.m. Wednesdays. At the Clallam Bay Library, Discovery Club is on the west lawn of the library on select Thursdays, July 7, 14, 28 and Aug. 4 at 3 p.m.
Discovery Club activities include:
• Week of June 27 — “Knot Tying Workshop:” a hands-on workshop.
• Week of July 4 — “STEAM Stations:” Each participant can build a cloud viewer, make a model asteroid, and start a nature terrarium in a bottle.
• Week of July 11 — “Take a Haiku:” Participants observe the landscape, learn about haiku and nature poetry then pen their own poems.
• Week of July 18 — “Recycled Art:” Participants create masterpieces out of recycled materials and art supplies.
• Week of July 25 — “STEAM Stations:” Activities include creating a sun print, making giant bubbles and building with marshmallows.
• Week of Aug. 1 — “Cardboard Kingdom:” Participants build structures, make costumes and create kingdoms of cardboard.
This year’s theme for the Summer Reading Program is “Read Beyond the Beaten Path.” NOLS will offer free art, science, and literacy activities throughout the summer centered on experiences like exploring nature, learning outdoor skills, and more.
