Deadline nears for Young Artist Competition application

PORT ANGELES — Applications for the 2018 Nico Snel Young Artist Competition are being accepted now.

The deadline is Dec. 15.

The competition — set for 9:30 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 20, at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Port Angeles — will be free and open to the public.

The 32nd annual Young Artist Competition is open to any North Olympic Peninsula student instrumentalist or vocalist from age 4 to 22 at the time of competition who did not win first place in the senior competition the preceding year.

Cash prizes are $500 for first place, $250 for second and $200 for third.

The 12th annual Junior Young Artist Competition was designed for students who might not be ready for the Young Artist Competition and is open to any local student instrumentalist (piano, strings, woodwinds, brass, percussionist, etc.) 14 or younger who did not win first place in the junior or senior competition the preceding year.

Cash prizes are $250 for first place, $125 for second and $75 for third.

This year’s judges are Denise Dillenbeck, Port Angeles Chamber Orchestra violin soloist and violin professor at Central Washington University; Linda Dowdell, composer and pianist; Anne Krabill, principal oboe of Port Angeles and Port Townsend Symphony orchestras, and Jonathan Pasternack, music director and conductor for the Port Angeles Symphony.
