Climber to tell of historic summit of Mount Everest

PORT ANGELES — Tyler Reid will speak today about his historic May summit of the northeast ridge of Mount Everest with his wife, Melissa Arnot, the first American woman to summit Everest without supplemental oxygen.

Reid will speak at 7 p.m. at the Red Lion Hotel, 221 N. Lincoln St.

Admission is a suggested $10. Proceeds will benefit the Hurricane Ridge Winter Sports Club. Food and drinks will be available.

Reid will tell the story of the adventure, including why they did not use oxygen, why they chose the northeast ridge and why they chose to do it without a media presence.

Without oxygen, Everest becomes much more dangerous, sports club members said in a news release, adding that more than a third of all deaths on Everest can be linked to people trying to climb without oxygen.

Only six other women have summited without oxygen. This was Arnot’s sixth summit. Only one other woman has summited Everest more often.

This was Reid’s first attempt on Everest.

Reid grew up on the Olympic Peninsula, climbing and backcountry skiing in the Olympic Mountains from the age of 13. He founded Pacific Alpine Guides in 2011 with a vision of creating inspiring programs in remote mountains around the world.

He has pioneered numerous first ski descents in the Olympic Mountains and Wrangell-St. Elias National Park.
