Birding, hiking among weekend activities

New Year’s Day birding, hiking and marathon bingo are among the weekend’s activities on the North Olympic Peninsula.

PORT TOWNSEND

Conversation cafe

PORT TOWNSEND — Conversation Cafe will meet at 11:45 a.m. today.

The public is invited to take part in discussions at Alchemy Bistro and Wine Bar, 842 Washington St.

Discounted swim

PORT TOWNSEND — Mountain View Pool will offer a discounted open swim from 6 to 8 tonight.

Everyone is invited to swim for $2 at the pool, 1919 Blaine St. The whole pool will be dedicated to play. Noodles, rings and other floating toys will be available.

No lap lanes will be offered. Children younger than 8 must be accompanied by a guardian.

PORT HADLOCK

Field trip

PORT HADLOCK — Admiralty Audubon will hold its third annual New Year’s Day birding field trip at Irondale Beach County Park from 9:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. Sunday.

Participants should meet at 9:30 a.m. in the parking lot at the end of Moore Road. The group will spend a couple of hours scoping Admiralty Bay for the first snowbirds, shorebirds and forest birds.

Everyone should wear warm layers with hats and gloves for comfort and bring binoculars and spotting scopes to help identify the waterfowl.

BRINNON

First day hike

BRINNON — Dosewallips State Park will be participating in Washington State Park’s “First Hikes” program at noon Sunday.

The public is invited to meet at the Meadows Trailhead parking lot, located on the opposite end of the highway bridge from the park entrance.

The hike will be an easy half-mile guided hike through forest, to the beach and uplands along Hood Canal.

The program will focus on saltwater and freshwater ecosystems in the park and will include a look at some shellfish specimens.

Snacks will be provided.

Participants are encouraged to dress in warm clothing and be prepared for blustery weather.

Porta-potties are available at the trailhead.

SEQUIM

Elks bingo

SEQUIM — The Sequim Elks Lodge will host bingo games from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday.

Admission will be free at the lodge at 143 Port Williams Road.

Minimum buy-in for the game is $10, and the Elks will offer popular bingo games, including progressive. Players must be 18 or older.

Snacks and refreshments will be available.

All proceeds will go to the Elks scholarship program, charities supported by the Elks and lodge operating costs.

FORKS

Marathon bingo

FORKS — The Forks Elks Lodge will host a Marathon Bingo Bowl from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday.

Most games will cost only 25 cents to play and there will be raffle prizes, 50/50 drawings and food for purchase at the Lodge, 941 Merchant Road.

Kids are welcome with adult supervision.
