Backyard Birding series continues Saturday

SEQUIM — “Winter Care and Feeding in the Garden” will be presented by Christie Lassen of Wild Birds Unlimited in Gardiner during the next lecture in the Backyard Birding series, set for 10 a.m. Saturday.

The 10-class series hosted by members of the Olympic Peninsula Audubon Society is at the Dungeness River Audubon Center at Railroad Bridge Park, 2151 W. Hendrickson Road.

During Saturday’s lecture, the third in the series, Lassen will describe general bird feeding methods, including types of feeders and various feeds designed to attract specific bird species, particularly those species wintering over in the local region.

Lassen also will describe clean feeding and watering techniques to promote healthy, thriving bird populations while discouraging unwelcome rodents.

She will address specific needs of the Anna’s hummingbird species that has started making the Pacific Northwest home year-round.

The series offers interested local residents information about observing and protecting wild bird life.

Backyard Birding can be taken either as individual classes or in a series. The cost of each session is $5. Admission is free for anyone younger than 18.

For participants completing five sessions in the series, Olympic Peninsula Audubon Society offers a free one-year membership.
