Archaeology talk
PORT ANGELES — Archaeologists studying Tse-whit-zen, an ancient Klallam village site, will present their findings at 7:30 p.m. today.
The free presentation will be in the second-floor conference room at The Landing mall, 115 E. Railroad Ave.
Tse-whit-zen, a Klallam village dating back some 2,700 years, was discovered in 2003 at a Marine Drive site earmarked for a state graving yard connected with work planned on the Hood Canal Bridge.
After artifacts and human remains were discovered, construction was halted and many artifacts were stored at the Burke Museum in Seattle.
Some of the more than 100,000 artifacts have since been returned to the Lower Elwha Klallam, who display them at the Elwha Heritage Center, 401 E. First St.
Klallam blockfest
PORT ANGELES — Families with children from 8 months to 8 years are invited to attend Blockfest at the Elwha Heritage Center, 401 E. First St.
The event will take place from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. today and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday.
First Teacher is brought to Clallam County through a grant from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to provide children with a head start in math and science.
The event is sponsored by the Elwha Klallam Heritage Center and Parenting Matters Foundation and the First Teacher Program, a United Way Partner Agency.

Harvest dinner
PORT ANGELES — The Esther Chapter of the Eastern Star will host a harvest dinner at the Masonic Lodge from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday.
Tickets for adults are $15, children ages 6 to 10 will be admitted for $10 and children younger than 6 will eat for free at the lodge, 622 S. Lincoln St.
The dinner will include turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes, gravy, vegetable, rolls, pies and coffee.

Veterans memorial
PORT ANGELES — The Marine Corps League, Mt. Olympus Detachment VFW, American Legion, Patriot Riders, National Guard and other groups will host a veterans memorial at 1 p.m. today.
The memorial is hosted each month at Veterans Park on Lincoln Street, across from the Safeway supermarket.
The names of all local veterans are read and a replica of the Liberty Bell is rung after each name.
An honor guard fires three rifle volleys and a bugler plays taps.
There is also a bagpiper who plays before and after the ceremony.

Alzheimer’s talk
PORT TOWNSEND — Dr. Sandra Smith-Poling will present a talk incorporating materials from the 2016 Scripps Institute Symposium on natural supplements at Quimper Unitarian Universalist Fellowship, 2333 San Juan Ave., from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday.
Smith-Poling is a physician, board-certified in internal medicine and sports medicine; and is medical director for Jefferson County Emergency Medical Services, West Olympic Peninsula and Navy Northwest.

Art reception
PORT TOWNSEND — The public is invited to see Intertribal Canoe Journeys on the Salish Sea, local art and to celebrate the 103rd anniversary of the Port Townsend Library’s Carnegie Building at the opening reception for a new Art in the Library show at the Port Townsend Library from 6 to 7:30 tonight.
The free exhibit runs through Feb. 17 at the library, 1220 Lawrence St.
The show will honor intertribal canoe journeys on the Salish Sea in a special exhibit of photography and objects made possible by the Jamestown S’Klallam tribe and tribal elder Celeste Dybeck and her husband, Don Dybeck.
In addition, work by photographer Joe Englander and encaustic artist Thya Merz will be exhibited.
Free refreshments, including birthday cake, will be served at the reception.

PORT TOWNSEND — Craig Reinarman, professor of sociology and legal studies at the University of California, Santa Cruz, will address cultures of drug use and abuse, drug law and public policy at Quimper Unitarian Universalist Fellowship at 7 p.m. today.
The discussion on “Appetites of the Soul: Addiction in the Post-Prohibition Era” will take place at the fellowship at 2333 San Juan Ave.

Everyone is invited to swim for $2 at the pool, 1919 Blaine St.

No lap lanes will be offered. Children younger than 8 must be accompanied by a guardian.

Quilts of valor
PORT TOWNSEND — Jefferson County Quilts of Valor will meet at 10 a.m. today at Creative Union Fabrics.
There is no cost to attend the quilting meeting at 112 Kala Square.
The group makes comfort quilts for veterans and service members.
It asks for a $5 donation for meetings and $5 yearly membership fee.
There is no requirement to join.
Patterns and quilting instruction are provided, and no experience is necessary.
The group is currently quilting for a presentation ceremony on Veterans Day.

SEQUIM — Chapter IV of Philanthropic Educational Organization will have a trunk sale fundraiser from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at First Presbyterian Church.
Items for sale include jewelry, silk and knit scarves, handbags, belts, gloves, hats and women’s tops at the church, 139 W. Eighth St.
The items were donated by PEO member Patti Dutro of Port Angeles. Proceeds will benefit women’s education projects.
Elks bingo
SEQUIM — The Sequim Elks Lodge will host bingo games from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday.
Admission will be free at the lodge at 143 Port Williams Road.
Minimum buy-in for the game is $10, and the Elks will offer popular bingo games, including progressive.
Players must be 18 or older.
Snacks and refreshments will be available.
All proceeds will go to the Elks scholarship program, charities supported by the Elks and lodge operating costs.

Lions breakfast
JOYCE — The Crescent Bay Lions Club will serve an all-you-can-eat breakfast from 8:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. Sunday.
The cost is $7 for adults and $4 for children 12 and younger at the club, state Highway 112 and Holly Hill Road.
The menu includes eggs cooked to order, hot cakes, French toast, biscuits and gravy, hashbrowns, ham, bacon or sausage, and coffee or tea.
Proceeds will support Crescent High School yearbooks, scholarships for seniors, holiday food baskets, glasses for the needy and other community projects.
