PORT TOWNSEND — A celebration of surfing — across the Olympic Peninsula and beyond — converges at the Cotton Building this Saturday night thanks to Port Townsend associate librarian and surfer Keith Darrock.
Darrock is curator of “Surfing: Art, Culture, History,” a free program featuring a raft of local artists and writers. They’re also surfers of course, and they’re all getting together at 6 p.m. Saturday.
Surfing journalist
Among the speakers will be journalist and author Drew Kampion, who lives on Whidbey Island. He was the editor of Surfer magazine during the late 1960s, and became known for his style of “new journalism.”
Kampion went on to edit Wind Surf and Wind Tracks magazines, serve as editorial director for the Patagonia clothing company and write tomes including The Book of Waves and Dora Lives: The Authorized Story of Miki Dora.
Also stepping up Saturday will be Erwin Dence, who will add his voice to the evening via his short work of fiction titled “Locals.”
Also awaiting the curious will be paintings and other surfing-inspired art by Jesse Watson, Todd Fischer and Steven Davis, plus photography by Christian Coxen.
This gathering is taking place at the Cotton Building, 607 Water St., alongside downtown Port Townsend’s free first-Saturday Gallery Walk. After Saturday, the surfing artwork will all move to the Port Townsend Library Learning Center at 1256 Lawrence St.
