PORT ANGELES – Here’s a way to keep traveling the path of lifelong student, while skipping any homework and having that hooky-playing feeling.
To Kill a Mockingbird, that novel assigned to so many high school English classes, has been chosen for the maiden voyage of Clallam County Reads.
Floating the idea out there, and hoping people from Clallam Bay and Forks and Port Angeles and Sequim will step on board, are Jayne Downie and Margie Palmer, outreach staff members with the North Olympic Library System.
They and a raft of other book lovers from across the county formed a committee last year to choose the first Clallam County Reads novel.
Mockingbird rose to the top, Palmer said, because it’s a story that can pull people together.
Clallam County Reads is an idea based on the one-community-one-book project that has brought people together in places such as Palo Alto, Calif., Bozeman, Mont., and Port Townsend.
It’s an idea whose time has come, said Paula Barnes, director of the North Olympic Library System that serves Clallam County with branches in Sequim, Port Angeles, Forks and Clallam Bay, when the idea was developed late last year.
Port Townsend Library’s third Community Read was in March, with the novel, Once in a Promised Land by T.C. Boyle.
