LETTERS: MAT no cure for Peninsula’s addiction problems

I am confounded that some of our local citizens do not entirely understand exactly what a methadone clinic does.

Otherwise, why would they defend placement of a methadone clinic in the heart of Sequim?

Methadone does not cure addiction.

Again — it is not a cure and the only fix addicts get from these clinics is a free hit of a highly addictive, pharmaceutically-created drug, akin to heroin.

The only cure for an addict lies within an addict’s own psyche.

No amount of free housing, free food, free transportation, free counseling and yes, free addictive opiates like methadone, will cure them.

However, when they are ready, Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous are there to help with a support network and a track record that speaks for itself.

A medication-assisted treatment clinic, on the other hand, has no guarantee of success.

May I suggest that all you do-gooders who wish to bring this highly controversial clinic into downtown Sequim, instead put your home where your mouth is and open your doors and invite in the next drug-addled, homeless person you see wandering the streets or camping in the parks.

I dare you.

Post your letter to the editor and let us know how that turns out for you.

And as for the Jamestown S’Klallam Tribe, I believe Blyn is the better location for the clinic that you have been granted millions and millions of dollars to build and operate.

Why Sequim?

Why should Sequim residents pay for Jefferson County addiction problems?

I don’t understand.
