LETTER: Women should have autonomy

After watching the vice presidential debate, which was refreshingly civil in its tone, I began to think about how Sen. JD Vance was framing his current opinion on abortion.

As opposed to his past opinions, which are markedly different.

He is now whole-heartedly getting behind Donald Trump’s strategy to dance around this most contentious issue by saying that it is best left to the individual states.

Mr. Vance says, “We have a big country, and it’s diverse and California has a different viewpoint on this than Georgia, and Georgia has a different viewpoint than Arizona” as justification for the Dobbs decision.

I think you can carry this argument further: Seattle probably has a different viewpoint than, say, Spokane.

I delivered babies for many years here in Port Angeles, and I can tell you a resident on West 10th Street might have a different viewpoint than a resident on West 11th Street.

And within that house on Cherry Street, one woman might have a different viewpoint than her sister.

And that’s the point: each of those women should have autonomy over her own body.

Geography should not interfere with the provision of basic health care.

The stakes in this election are so high.

Our recent primary contest for Commissioner of Public Lands clearly demonstrated that every vote counts.

I urge you to carefully consider all the ramifications as you complete your ballot this year, and, no matter your choice, I urge you to vote.
