LETTER: What will Democrats propose for the economy in 2020?

Call me crazy but I sympathize with our Democrat friends.

Particularly Speaker Pelosi, who has the unenviable task of convincing the electorate to vote Democrat in 2020.

In the immortal words of James Carville, “it’s the economy, stupid,” the most important factor in any election is the state of the economy and what the candidates propose to do to improve it.

So what the heck are the Democrats going to propose in 2020?

Obviously, they can’t realistically promise more jobs because, under Trump, we are approaching full employment. At 3.7 percent unemployment nationwide, we have hit a 50-year low.

Moreover, this rosy employment picture transcends all demographics and so Democrats can’t appeal to jobless “persons of color” because Black and Hispanic unemployment rates have never been lower.

It would seem that anyone who is willing to work can find employment.

Further, Democrats can no longer lament stagnant wage growth because, as attested to in the Current Population Survey, “Most recently, CPS average individual wage growth was a healthy 5.0 percent”

Not forgetting another major indicator — the stock market — which has appreciated by some 40 percent since Trump’s election.

For sure, Ms. Pelosi has a really hard sell economy-wise.

In fact, the only promise that she can make is that the economy would get even further under a Democrat regime.

But you need only look back to the lackluster Obama years to question that logic.

Yes, one is tempted to pity Ms. Pelosi, and almost feel sorry for her.

Almost.
