LETTER: What were they thinking?

I heard a report on a Seattle radio station that perplexed me.

It seems that the state Legislature spent $250,000 to receive a study for the Transportation Department.

The study is to advise whether it is feasible to build a passenger railway from Spokane to Seattle.

It takes approximately 4.5 hours to drive from Spokane to Seattle.

It is estimated that the train trip would take over 8 hours.

I unnderstand that passenger cost would require a subsidy of $5 by us taxpayers for every dollar charged to riders.

The total project was reported to cost hundreds of millions of dollars.

Representative Mike Chapman is on the House Transportation Committee and voted for the study.

Senator Kevin Van De Wege voted to pass this budget item as did Representative Steve Tharinger.

What are these guys thinking?

Sounds like another California train boondoggle.

Is this what we really want for Washington state when so many businesses are barely afloat or have closed?

If our legislators were really concerned about us they could advocate for a special session aimed at solving potentially catastrophic economic problems.

Won’t happen in an election year.
