LETTER: Unity, not tribalism, will make America strong

Patrick Buchanan deplores the left’s idea that a moral society is one of maximum ethnic, cultural and religious diversity. He believes that tribalism (his dog-whistle for white dominance) is the way to preserve American democracy (“Is democracy on the way down,” PDN, Jan. 23).

Buchanan states, “There are matters, such as the preservation of a unique people and nation, that are too important to be left to temporary majorities to decide.”

What “temporary majority” does Buchanan mean?

The Republican Party is overwhelmingly white and older, according to Gallup polling.

While non-Hispanic whites are currently the majority of Americans (62 percent), nonwhites are expected to become the majority of the nation’s children by 2020, according to the Census Bureau.

The bureau predicts no one racial or ethnic group will dominate the U.S. in terms of size by 2044.

Young adults preferred Clinton over Trump by a wide 55 percent to 37 percent margin, according to Pew Research.

With time, the younger generation will dominate voting.

Trends already in place show that Buchanan himself is part of a “temporary majority.”

Old, white men will eventually be outnumbered by minorities and younger voters.

Tribalism in the inevitable multi-cultural America would be a disaster.

Only unity will lead to a strong future America.

Indeed, too important to leave to Buchanan and his ilk.
