LETTER: Tolerance lacking

Port Townsend

We accidentally, then intentionally, joined a parade of “Back the Blue” cars and trucks outside Port Townsend on Sunday. .

We drove about four miles into town, hearing many cars honking, both with and without signs and flags.

Because a conservative movement is rarely if ever noticeable in Port Townsend, we kept expecting the parade to fade away.

But no, downtown was full in both directions.

Over 400 vehicles, many with all seats filled, participated.

What we saw and heard from the opposition were about five uses of the “F” word, several middle fingers, one young woman with a BLM sign on her car who hollered at us.

A young man with a telephoto lens was taking photos of those of us supporting Blue Lives.

He made a great show of filming me as I smiled at him, clearly trying to be intimidating.

Also a group of about 10-12 young people held up a sign that read something like “We (Americans) have red blood on our hands.”

All I could think of is how utterly clueless they are about the world at large.

And the ultimate opposing view was expressed by a young woman, part of this group, who stood in the street for a long while mooning the parade with both hands raised, middle fingers waving in the air.

The city of tolerance and inclusivity showed its welcome to an alternative view by behaving like disrespectful miscreants.
