LETTER: Thank postal carriers

If you had asked me a few weeks ago what a U.S. Postal Service employee does, I would have said that the employee delivers mail.

And I would have been wrong.

Delivering the mail is how they do what they do.

But what they do is bridge building and bridge maintenance.

That employee builds and maintains all the mental, emotional, spiritual and commercial bridges that bind us as a society.

Who hasn’t checked their mail with a sense of both curiosity and anticipation?

Who among us has not held a handwritten note and been delighted by the thoughtfulness of the sender?

Who among us has not avoided the loss of our electrical services thanks to a mailed reminder?

Our post service employees need our support right now.

As I write this letter, I don’t know what I am going to do personally to provide some support.

But I am going to find out.

I am going to ask the folks at our local post office if there is anything I can do to support their bridge building and maintenance.

I do know, however, that the next time I head for the local post office, I am going to pick up a thank-you card and drop it off.

Join me.
