At a recent Local 2020 event, I was reminded of all the places where our mayor, Deborah Stinson, has left her positive mark on so many issues involving climate change in our community.
As a science educator for over 40 years, I was overjoyed at meeting Stinson 14 years ago and learning of her significant actions to promote a sustainable community.
Stinson was on the ground floor in 2005 as a climate action plan was created to reduce Jefferson County’s carbon emissions by 80 percent by 2050 — a courageous and ambitious (and necessary) endeavor.
When a Climate Action Committee was formed to implement the plan in 2011, Stinson was one of the leaders.
I joined that committee in 2012 and have seen firsthand her hard work to implement the plan.
As a City Council member, she works tirelessly to find every opportunity to reduce our carbon footprint in ways that work for the planet and our city budget.
She is a member of Climate Mayors, joining 279 mayors across the United States now committed to adopting the Paris Agreement goals in their cities.
Deborah has been involved with Local 2020, the All-County Picnic, Jefferson County emergency preparedness (which is extremely important as we face the situations brought by our changing climate), and multiple Earth Day events.
I am honored to support her re-election to our City Council and know she will continue to serve Port Townsend as a dedicated change-maker and champion for a sustainable community.
