LETTER: Sequim mayor, QAnon

Sequim mayor, QAnon

Mayor William Armacost continues to show he does not understand the line between his private life and his role as an elected official.

The QAnon video he refers to in Coffee With the Mayor endorses Donald Trump for president.

Elections matter, he claims.

This seems like it might be a violation of RCW 45.17A.55

“No elective official nor any employee of his or her office nor any person appointed to or employed by any public office or agency may use or authorize the use of any of the facilities of a public office or agency, directly or indirectly, for the purpose of assisting a campaign for election of any person to any office …”

In addition, his contact number as posted on the City of Sequim website is a city number that then directs constituents to his personal cell phone number.

The message promotes vitamins he sells.

While this is technically legal, it certainly does not pass the appearance test.

He complains that his free speech isn’t recognized.

He has a profound misunderstanding of the First Amendment, which prohibits the government from restricting speech.

The government hasn’t restricted his speech.

However, when I phoned him, and let him know I was calling him because he was the mayor, to ask him why he didn’t quarantine himself, he hung up on me.

Now, that is an example of the government restricting free speech.

Time for him to resign.
