LETTER: Postpone levy collection

Our world will never been the same.

Horrifying to think that the world-shuddering 9/11 has been eclipsed.

As this horror continues to unfold, we know not where it will lead us.

The repercussions of the pandemic will reverberate for years, possibly decades.

It has and will continue to change us in ways we cannot predict.

After the pandemic subsides, before the virus returns in one form or other — as scientists tell us, we will be left to pick up the pieces of our every day lives, the pieces of our economy; evaluate the value of our savings, and work hard to again accumulate wealth, in the modern and archaic sense of that word.

Which will inevitably lead us to reconsider our obligations.

What have we committed ourselves to funding, personally as well as for our community?

What are our priorities?

How will we keep our homes?

How will we pay our property taxes?

How are our tax dollars best spent?

The pandemic has already altered how our children are taught; where our children learn.

The recent passage of a new school district levy committed Port Angeles tax dollars to build and upgrade physical structures.

In this age of uncertainty, to protect our families, online schooling must be seriously considered.

Maybe it’s time we rethink commitments such as building community structures and consider postponing them — so that families can deal with what is going to be a catastrophic recession.
