I support the writer of the letter “Fence not Solution” in the PDN on May 12.
It seems obvious that Veterans Memorial Park is being used by the homeless and others in need because it is centrally located and has shelter.
So how can Port Angeles create another centrally located, sheltered gathering place with toilets, trash cans, benches and other necessities?
Wouldn’t it be useful for social services and police needs as well as for those who are homeless or looking for work?
Yes, it could be a gathering place for trouble, but why not make such a spot a target for our creativity and resourcefulness?
The location of the Saturday Farmers’ Market already has shelter and toilets — and a police office.
Is it naive to think that it could be used at least temporarily?
What are other towns doing?
We are certainly not the only town with homeless folks.
What do the people now using Veterans Memorial Park say would help them the most?
In addition to a home, food, jobs and addiction treatment.
