LETTER: Opioid addiction clinic was a done deal when announced

As we hear more about the MAT clinic planned for Sequim, the more divisive the issue becomes.

One issue that has polarized the community is the way the clinic was presented to the public.

It was a done deal between the tribe and our legislators when it became public.

Prior to announcing their plans, an alarming statistic was conveniently published, stating that Clallam County had 16.5 opioid-related deaths per 100,000 people, the highest in the state.

Beware of statistics.

We do not have 100,000 people living in Clallam County.

More addicts could be treated if the clinic were located in a large city.

The size and location of the facility is unpopular.

There are places other than the heart of Sequim they should have chosen for the center.

The amount granted to the tribe for this project could help finance our schools, or be used to increase employees in state mental health hospitals and prisons declared unsafe due to lack of staff.

The state should fund those facilities and projects that are its primary responsibility.

There is probably nothing that will stop this clinic being built in Sequim.

If you are unhappy about it, I recommend that when our representatives who put this deal together run for re-election, do not support them.

Vote for legislators who will respect and represent all of their constituents.
