LETTER: Move the Lions Park sequoia to another location

Move it instead

Sequoia — is there time remaining to consider an alternative to removing this beautiful Port Angeles tree?

In place of removing it, how about moving it?

A historic house in a national park was moved and several documentaries show how very large lighthouses were moved.

I believe I even watched a documentary about how a very large magnolia tree was moved on a southern plantation.

Our park is an ideal location to attempt such a move.

There are no other playgrounds or children’s areas to be disturbed.

No overhead wires.

I don’t know if a tree this large would survive a move, but if the cost is not too great, how much could be lost?

If there is a state or national foundation seeking to help small cities to save their trees, perhaps they could help.

Perhaps a construction firm could take this on as a great adventure and maybe just be paid their costs?

Perhaps citizen groups could donate time and effort to prep the site, help in the move and accomplish the clean up after the move.

If an arborist could design a strapping system to tie two trunks together, I would donate time and energy to install it.

Does anyone think this might be an option?

My van, trailer, shovels and wheelbarrows are ready.

Paul Brown,

Port Angeles
