LETTER: Mayor’s action unworthy of her office in Port Angeles

Mayor Sissi Bruch has withdrawn her controversial proposal to remove the guns held by two metallic representations of Revolutionary War soldiers at Veterans Memorial Park.

Her reasoning is “that we will not be able to have a candidly good conversation on this.”

“I felt there was not the emotional space out there to discuss this.”

Bruch seems to be looking for cover while removing her proposal.

If her proposal, in her own words, does not merit an open community discussion it does not merit consideration.

That said, it is obvious that she does not have an understanding and appreciation of what this park represents and celebrates.

The Veterans Memorial Park is a lasting tribute to the men and women who answered the call to defend the United States of America.

This country asked them to bear arms in that defense.

It is a shame that our local government did not have the political will to preserve the park as an open space to honor our veterans.

For the mayor to add to that disrespect is unworthy of her office.

When the bell at Veterans park is rung it honors our veterans as its solemn peal travels out across our city that our veterans’ sacrifice will not be forgotten.

Our veterans’ service will be properly remembered today — Veterans Day — at 10:30 a.m. at the Coast Guard Base on Ediz Hook.

God bless America.

Chuck Brown,

Port Angeles
