LETTER: Loves salmon but not net pens

First, I’d like to say that I love salmon.

I only eat fresh-caught salmon obtained from local sources.

With that in mind, if you consume Atlantic salmon raised in saltwater net pens, you are taking a chance on consuming fish that are contaminated with all sorts of bad stuff.

Where do you think all of the excrement that these fish produce go?

What do other fish hanging around outside of these pens eat?

I think you can guess.

How do you think the fish farmers control disease in these pens?

I think you can guess that also.

If you’re really interested in learning more about this, just do a search on the internet and you will find many videos showing what goes on in these fish farms.

I guarantee you will never eat a farmed Atlantic salmon the rest of your life after seeing a few of those videos.

So the issue about these net pens is more than just worrying about how they might escape.

Call your representative and ask them to pass HB 2418.
