LETTER: Lawsuit against NRA is ill conceived

The New York attorney general’s lawsuit against the National Rifle Association is a self-interested move that solves no problems but creates many.

First, it adds to the increasing distrust the public has in state and federal attorneys general, once considered a role beyond politics, while accomplishing nothing.

In her news conference announcing the lawsuit, she made it clear this is less about enforcing New York laws protecting the public (and certainly not the members of the NRA); it’s about shutting down the NRA altogether.

The problem is that even if she manages to dissolve the NRA on a Tuesday, by 12:01 a.m. Wednesday a new group will spring up to take its place.

It will be bigger, stronger and more militant than what came before.

Second, the lawsuit won’t solve the gun problem.

It can’t repeal or amend the Second Amendment.

Third, by filing the lawsuit before the election she has singlehandedly given the president a huge boost in his re-election campaign by generating more pro-Trump campaign donations and votes.

She has made Mr. Trump a very happy man.

Most egregious, this attorney general is smart enough to know all this but filed the lawsuit anyway.

She clearly allowed her obvious political ambition to eclipse the good of the country.

Speaking as one who believes strongly in the public good created by most attorneys general, supports reasonable gun regulation under the Second Amendment, and backs Joe Biden for President, I am completely disgusted.
