LETTER: Kudos to protecting Constitutional rights, public safety

I would like to thank Sen. Kevin Van De Wege for his leadership in the Senate in helping pass legislation to ban bumper stocks.

I would also like to congratulate him for being named Legislator of the Year by the Washington Council of Police and Sheriffs.

Finally, I would respectfully ask that the newspaper consider re-framing all of your headlines about gun safety with “Firearm rights…” (headline on front page PDN, Jan. 26-27).

Please remember all the amendments were added after the Constitution itself was passed.

The preamble to that document declares its purpose to be to “establish justice, insure domestic tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general welfare .…”

So, I think public safety could be a headline alternative to “Firearm rights.”

Or, “promoting the general welfare.”

Or, “establishing justice.”

Elements of the more basic purpose of the Constitution might be mentioned as an alternative headline to “firearm rights.”

Thank you Sen. Van De Wege for helping to provide for our “common defense” and promoting our “general welfare” in our homes and public spaces.

Thank you.

Jim Dries,
