LETTER: Disfiguring surgery?

Sequim

At present, the filibuster rule in the Senate requires a supermajority, not 51, but 60 votes to pass major bills.

That rule has stagnated the Senate for years.

But Pat Buchanan, (PDN Aug. 4, “As the Filibuster goes, so goes the GOP”) believes it would be a disaster to rule by a simple majority of 51 percent.

It was absolutely astounding to me that Pat Buchanan’s column describes exactly what I, a Democrat, think this country needs to recover from the past four years of Trump — and which Mr. Buchanan thinks would “disfigure” the country.

I actually felt a jolt of joy at his predictions of what would happen in the Senate if we abolished the filibuster and returned to a simple majority to pass bills.

Mr. Buchanan, fearful of a Republican minority in 2021, offers his ideas of all the terrible things those Democrats might put forth such as: automatically register every citizen to vote, make Election Day a holiday, guarantee the rights and dignity of everyone in this country, give statehood to Puerto Rico and D.C., enact the New Green deal, and give Medicare to All.

Do you, dear reader, see anything wrong with those ideas?

If not, vote Democratic.
