LETTER: Democrats have long hated the Republican Party

Thomas Friedman’s column “The American Civil War, Part II” (PDN, Oct. 10) was thought-provoking.

The Republican president, Abraham Lincoln, was inaugurated March 4, 1861.

At 4:30 a.m., April 12, 1861, the Democratic slave states attacked Fort Sumter, starting the American Civil War.

The four-year war that took 620,000 lives was one of the bloodiest wars in U.S. history.

The American constitutional system, upheld by the Republican Party, collided with the Democratic Party’s insistence on maintaining the slave trade.

This is not Fox News.

This is history.

The Democratic Party’s white-hot hatred of Republicans has a long record.
