The late Art Feiro once said Port Angeles is a place that takes care of itself.
This has always been the Port Angeles I know.
Unfortunately, our current school facilities belie that notion.
Anyone who thinks we have a problem of poor school maintenance should avail themselves, as I have, of the tours being offered at Stevens Middle School (at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 28 and Tuesday, Feb. 4), meet director of facilities Nolan Duce and learn what the real issues are.
Stevens (1960), like Franklin (1954), Hamilton (1956) and the high school (1953), all built with 1950’s school construction standards, have all outlived their expected lifespans and do not allow for the current educational needs of our students. These buildings have been well maintained to the extent possible.
Poor maintenance is simply not the issue.
These buildings cannot be modern, effective halls of learning without major upgrades.
What better investment could we make than giving our kids the tools and environment they need to succeed?
I encourage you to vote yes for this critical school levy.
