LETTER: Compassion, compromise required for roadside memorials

In response to a letter to the editor about distracting roadside memorials, there are a few points to consider.

It’s understandable that these memorials are cathartic for the grieving loved ones and may help in coping with the finality of their loss.

Highway safety is also critical.

Placing size limitations and restrictions, including distance from the road, and the length of time displays are allowed, would be a fair compromise.

Lastly, the longer a display stays erected, the less it gets noticed as it becomes a part of the landscape.

This eventually will defeat (the partial purpose) of grieving loved ones wanting to share their loss and their departed loved one with the community.

Time-limited displays would assist with the issue of a loss eventually becoming invisible.

Shaming any agency or individual is less than helpful.

Compassion and compromise however, will always be effective and aid in healing such tragic losses.
