LETTER: Census count must be continued

From Port Townsend

The Trump administration plans to end the census count on Sept. 30.

We have been in a partial lockdown for six months and census officials estimate that roughly 40 percentage of households have not submitted census data.

If the census ends at the end of September, we will almost certainly have an undercount.

Article I, Section 2 of the United State Constitution mandates the census stating: “Representatives and direct Taxes shall be apportioned among the several States…according to their respective Numbers…”

This was amended by Section 2 of the 14th Amendment to include the phrase “counting the whole number of persons in each State, excluding Indians not taxed.”

Note the requirement for “whole number.”

Both President Trump and Commerce Secretary Ross swore to “support and defend the Constitution;” therefore they have a duty to complete the census as specified in the Constitution.

The census count must be continued until “the whole number of persons in each state…” have been determined.
