LETTER: Can’t trust developers, elected officials about marina

It seems that the Port of Port Angeles is considering selling John Wayne Marina to developers.

In today’s world, “developer” means achieving as much short-term profit as possible regardless of the long-term consequences, such as environmental degradation.

We have recently seen that while California and Oregon chose not to do it, some ill-advised state agencies in the past approved the farming of Atlantic salmon in our waters.

So while we cannot trust developers, neither can we rely on our elected officials to get it right, either.

Let us recall that the land for the marina was a gift to the county to preserve Mr. Wayne’s legacy and for the enjoyment of our citizens (“Packed crowd speaks out,” PDN, March 30).

To sell it off would be bad barma at the very least.

The county would lose supervision and control of an important and sensitive waterfront, which would benefit none of us.

Do not sell this property.

John D. Nagy,

Port Angeles
