LETTER: Addiction treatment center

“Communities that thrive focus on building local assets… Communities that struggle and eventually die focus on needs…” (McKnight/Kretzman, Northwestern University)

One could argue that the proposed treatment center in Sequin is a focus on needs.

We disagree.

The most important asset in a community is its people.

Recognizing and accepting our propensity to make poor choices as we move through life stages is a struggle for every generation.

Believing in our ability to be redeemed is essential if we, together, are going to build a viable future.

The Jamestown S’Klallam Tribe and its chairman, Ron Allen, have played a lead role in creating a future vision for the Olympic Peninsula.

The tribe along with county leadership understand that efforts to create a sustainable future can’t happen unless our historical, resourced based economic business cycles are replaced with a new way of developing a community’s’ most important asset, its people.

We will need everyone healthy and able to participate if our region is going to take advantage of the opportunities that the new economy will offer.
