I’m writing in total support of the Jamestown S’Klallam Tribe’s proposal to build a medication assisted treatment center in Sequim.
If the treatment center were proposed for construction in my hometown, Port Townsend, I would enthusiastically endorse the plan.
Alcoholism and substance abuse are massive problems in America.
They are diseases, not evidence of moral failure.
Any just and compassionate society is obligated to treat them as comprehensively as cancer or heart disease are treated.
The groundless hysteria ginned up by Save Our Sequim reminds me of the panic induced in old sci-fi movies by the impending invasion of space aliens.
As an economic force that creates jobs and fresh income, the tribe has excelled.
Clearly the Jamestown S’Klallam Tribe knows how to build and operate successful enterprises.
Auxiliary to the new medical center, other businesses would surely sprout up in the Sequim area, generating additional employment as well as increased revenue for the city of Sequim.
Finally, the S’Klallam’s proposal is incredibly generous and far-sighted.
The treatment center would be a superlative addition to the capacity of health care institutions in Clallam and Jefferson counties to respond adequately to the manifold health care needs of its citizens.
