Writing workshop, reading set for Sunday in Port Angeles

PORT ANGELES — San Francisco writer Heather June Gibbons will teach a workshop and give a free reading from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday at the Port Angeles Fine Arts Center.

First comes the workshop at the fine arts center at 1203 E. Lauridsen Blvd.

The workshop is open to new and experienced writers.

Titled “Writing Raw,” it offers a safe space to explore creative expression and even take some risks and break new ground.

Gibbons will give participants writing prompts inspired by the center’s art gallery and surrounding art park.

Cost for the workshop is $75; writers can sign up at www.PAFAC.org.

At 5 p.m. the same day, Gibbons will give a free poetry reading at the fine arts center.

She’ll offer selections from her award-winning book “Her Mouth as Souvenir,” which one critic called “part garage rock, part requiem and part power ballad.”

Gibbons, who grew up on Bainbridge Island, is a graduate of the Iowa Writers’ Workshop.

She teaches creative writing at San Francisco State University and in the local community.

For more information about Gibbons’ presentations and other Port Angeles Fine Arts Center activities — including the “Mothers & Makers” photography show on display now through April 21 — call 360-457-3532.

The center’s gallery is open with free admission from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursdays through Sundays.

The Webster’s Woods 5-acre art park around it is open daily from dawn until dusk.
