Writers on the Spit’s Fourth Friday Readings features mysteries

SEQUIM — Mystery and suspense writers will read selections from their gripping tales at Writers on the Spit’s Fourth Friday Readings this evening.

The two featured speakers, Kimberly Minard and Melee Vander Velde, both Sequim residents and educators, will debut their novels currently in the works in The Lodge’s Media Room at 660 Evergreen Farm Way.

The readings begin at 6:30 p.m., but arriving a half-hour early buys time to snag a beverage and snack at the Espresso Bistro at The Lodge.

Minard’s mystery novel “Fresh Meat” follows a murder at a roller derby. Velde’s suspense novel “Faces in Stone” explores the life of a sculptress who creates terrifying images.

Minard holds a master’s degree in English literature and says she deeply loves all things mysterious. When not writing, she can be found teaching high school English online, reading and knitting — sometimes all at the same time. She lives in Sequim with her husband and daughter.

Velde has traveled all over the world, living from New Zealand to Fresno, Calif., but now calls Sequim home. When she isn’t reading or tapping away at the keyboard, she’s working as a counselor at Sequim High School or hanging out with her three favorite people: her husband, Derek, and their two daughters.

An hour of five-minute open mic readings will follow the two featured speakers. Interested writers should come early to submit their names. Writers are encouraged to rehearse, as they will be timed.
