World-fusion concert planned in Port Townsend

PORT TOWNSEND — World-fusion music pioneers will perform at the Port Townsend Friends Meetinghouse on Saturday.

TRIO’s concert will be at 7:30 p.m. at the meetinghouse at 1841 Sheridan St.

It will feature Grammy Award-winning woodwind player Nancy Rumbel joining local harpist David Michael and sarodist Richard Russell. (A sarod is a 25-stringed fretless lute from India).

Tickets are $20 in advance from Port Townsend Food Co-op at 414 Kearney St. or online from Brown Paper Tickets at www.brownpapertickets.com/event/3090564. They will be $25 at the door.

TRIO’s unique arrangement of instruments draws from a wide range of cultural sources.

Rumbel plays oboe, English horn and ocarina. She established her world-music performances as a member of the Paul Winter Consort and is known for her 31 years with the Grammy Award-winning duo Tingstad & Rumbel.

She has performed and/or recorded with electric cellist Jami Sieber, pianist David Lanz and vocalists Susan Osborn and Cris Williamson, and has played in such venues as Carnegie Hall; the Ho-Am Award Ceremony in Seoul, Korea; Buddhist temples in Japan; Yellowstone, Yosemite and Grand Canyon national parks; and the gray whale calfing grounds in Mexico.

Michael, a Port Townsend resident, is a composer, producer and a master of improvisation who has produced 24 CDs of original music — mostly released on his independent label, Purnima Productions.

His music has been featured on syndicated radio shows, on cable and network television, and in nature films. He has also toured Europe, performing in castles, cultural centers and the walking streets of Scandinavia.

For more about him, see www.purnimaproductions.com.

Russell is a prolific composer, performer, recording artist and teacher. Recognized as one of the early pioneers of East/West fusion, he was a member of the seminal world-fusion group Ancient Future.

He learned Indian classical music during a year in Nepal and continued studying with world-renowned sarod master Ali Akbar Khan at the Ali Akbar College of Music in San Rafael, Calif.

He now leads and composes for the world-music kirtan ensemble Shantikar.

Longtime friends, Russell met Michael in 1973 when both were attending The Evergreen State College in Olympia, and they have collaborated on numerous recording projects since then.

For more about Russell, see www.shantikar.com.

Purnima Productions and the Port Townsend Food Co-op are sponsoring the concert.
