Woodworker, tin artist featured at PT Gallery

Peninsula Daily News

Two artists will be featured througout February at Port Townsend Gallery.

The work of Martha Collins and Loran Scruggs will be at the gallery, 715 Water St. in Port Townsend. It is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily and also by appointment.

Collins is a woodworker with a small niche. Through a process of lamination and turning, she creates intricate patterns that are made into small spirit bowls, bracelets, jewelry and tableware.

Her mosaic artwork is created from sustainable woods from all over the world and hand-dyed maple veneer.

This month, she will exhibit her “Tale of Two Bowls,” which was made for the 2021 Smithsonian Craft Show. Collins is currently preparing for the 2022 Smithsonian Craft Show, which will be held April 20- 24 in Washington, D.C.

Loran Scruggs has been making works out of tin cans since 1991.

Scruggs has been making works out of tin cans since 1991. She primarily worked in 3D, creating patterns on paper and then transferring them to tin.

Cutting, folding, rivets and slot-and-tab construction were methods used. Bottle caps became a large part of her work later when she started making whistles.

The 2D flat piece plaques started shortly after that, created by cutting and nailing tin to wood.

Scruggs’ artwork is about joy, play and reuse. She looks for printed tin and bottle caps, with their color and glints of shine. Labels and advertising iconography often are brightly colored with simple words and images very much like children’s educational toys.
