Woodwork, paintings highlighted at Port Townsend Gallery

PORT TOWNSEND — The Port Townsend Gallery is spotlighting woodworking artist Martha Collins and painter Scott Pascoe during June.

The gallery, at 715 Water St., is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily, as well as by appointment.

Collins has been exploring the interplay of different natural woods and dyed maple veneer for 45 years. She uses sustainably sourced domestic and exotic woods from all over the world, much of it from Edensaw Woods.

Her work looks like intricate basketry or needlework tapestry, according to a gallery press release.

Her process of lamination and lathe turning creates artworks and wearables with up to 1,000 pieces of wood in them. She makes bowls, bracelets, jewelry and tableware.

This month, she is presenting her new 2021 salt and pepper shaker sets. There are two styles: the 3 Stripe Series and the Bold Mosaic Series.

A lifetime resident of Puget Sound, Pascoe paints pastels of coastal landscapes. Whether they are beaches and bluffs, estuaries, islands or reflections on water, he paints to capture essence of place and time, he said, paying attention to the infused light, color tonalities and movement that distinguishes one landscape from another.

Pascoe’s paintings rely as much on subtraction as they do addition. He distresses and removes pigment and layers with pottery tools, palette knives and wire brushes. Brushes and pastel sticks remove and blend colors and add texture and movement and gesture. Layers add depth and luminosity.

His exhibit focuses on the diverse water borne and shaped landscapes of the Salish coastline.
