PORT TOWNSEND — The Port Townsend Gallery’s featured artists for the month of February are Martha Collins and Susan Hazard.
The gallery at 715 Water St. is open from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday, Saturday and Sunday, as well as by appointment.
Collins has been exploring the matrix of interaction between exotic and domestic woods and dyed maple veneer for 45 years, organizers said.
She has refined a 100-step process of lamination, band saw slicing and lathe turning to create unique works of art and wearables with up to 1,000 pieces in them.
Complex patterns of natural wood tones are accented by hand-dyed veneers.
“Many of her bracelets and spirit bowls have the appearance of intricate basketry, needlepoint or bead work. Her current projects include necklaces and small boxes,” said Mitchel Osborne, gallery member, in a press release.

Hazard’s “Floribunda” painting series is inspired by gardens and flowers. The paintings, rendered in oils and acrylics, are designed to reflect the energy of the garden, the artist said. “The more color, the more life.”
“Susan’s paintings explore the exciting possibilities of color, texture and movement using vibrant colors,” Osborne said.
“The vibrant colors applied as strokes, marks, swaths and carved surfaces with palette knives and brushes to build a unique surface of movement and texture,” he said. “The gold backgrounds capture and reflect light, continuously transforming the painting.”
Hazard’s influences are the French and American Impressionists, Gustav Klimt and Charles Rennie Makintosh.
“She is delighted to return to the Port Townsend Gallery after an eight-year hiatus and to bring her colorful paintings to the community.
