PORT TOWNSEND — The first in this year’s Jefferson County Historical Society’s First Friday Lecture Series will be at 6:30 tonight.

This year’s series focuses on women’s voices, experiences and innovations as the historical society commemorates the centennial of Women’s Suffrage in Washington state.

The series will be hosted by the Northwest Maritime Center at 431 Water St.

The season pass holder reception will be at 6 p.m.

General admission will be $10.

Season passes are $65 for historical society and $80 for those who are not members.

The first lecture will feature Heidi Yantz exploring notable women in STEM fields who persevered despite substantial barriers to education and employment.

With passion, dedication and sheer will, these women went on to make significant contributions to the technologies and overall standards of living of today, organizers said.

Yantz has 20 years experience working as an environmental hydrogeologist on site investigation and cleanup projects across the Pacific Northwest and the Midwest.

She is a founding board member of Women in Environment and is a board and committee member for the Northwest Environmental Business Council.

Yantz grew up in Port Townsend and is a 1983 Port Townsend High School graduate. She received her bachelor’s degree in business from the University of Washington and later graduated with a master’s degree in the geosciences from UW-Milwaukee.
