‘Wish Upon a Pizza’ show set for Sunday in Chimacum

CHIMACUM — The 14/48 Projects is headed back to Western Washington parks once again this summer with “When You Wish Upon A Pizza” and has slated a free performance for 2 p.m. Sunday at HJ Carroll Park.

Written by Amy Escobar and directed by Monica Galarneau, this new play has the fictional Pat making a wish upon a personal pan pizza. The Fairy Goudamother sends characters tumbling into the pizza box and onto a grand adventure through the Magic Kingdough, where they meet classic storybook characters with a cheesy twist.

Pat goes on a journey of discovery where characters learn about responsibility, family and love with pizza puns and plenty of fun, according to a news release.

When asked about the inspiration behind the play, playwright Escobar said, “I wanted to tell an original story with all the trappings of your classic storybook adventure. Instead of simply re-telling fairy tales that are often problematic, I focused on creating a new play that was conscious of gendered language and inclusive while still bringing in those familiar characters and tropes.

“I also wanted to write something with gnomes and pizza puns, because writing is a solitary endeavor and it’s more fun with cheese puns.”

“When You Wish Upon A Pizza” embraces the collaborative, improvisational style The 14/48 Projects has perfected throughout years of free family performances in the parks, and combines veteran performers and newcomers alike.

This summer’s cast features Katie Jasper, Geb Brown, Alysha Curry, Rachel Delmar, Cristin Fenzel, Blake Simpson, and Zenaida Smith. Costumes were designed by Corinne Magin.

Donations to support the artists are accepted.

The 14/48 Projects is in the middle of its fifth season producing 14/48: The World’s Quickest Theater Festival, Theater Anonymous and other collaborative artistic events. The 14/48 Projects of Seattle is led by President Jodi-Paul Wooster and Executive Director Shawn Belyea.
