Winterfest, concerts, drama, art exhibits on hand this weekend

A winter sports education fundraiser and a variety of music, drama and art shows are offered on the North Olympic Peninsula this weekend.

• Winterfest, the Hurricane Ridge Winter Sports Club’s annual fundraiser to support winter sports education at Hurricane Ridge, will be at 6 p.m. Saturday at the Vern Burton Community Center.

Doors will open at 5 p.m. at the center at 308 E. Fourth St., Port Angeles.

Tickets are $75 in advance and $90 at the door. A community table for eight is $600. A community table for 10 is $750. Tickets can be purchased online at www.hurricane ridge.com.

• Samite Mulondo, an internationally known Ugandan musician, actor and humanitarian, will provide two performances of his show “Resilience” on Saturday.

The performances are set for 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Saturday in the Donna M. Morris Theater at Field Hall & Events Hall, 201 W. Front St., Port Angeles.

Tickets are $10 for students and youth, $15 to $40 for adults, and are available at www.fieldhall events.org/tickets or by calling the Field Hall box office at 360-477-4679, ext. 1.

After each performance, Field Hall invites attendees to a First Fed Community Conversation with Mulondo. The matinee conversation will feature Dr. Paul Cunningham of the Jamestown Family Health Clinic, exploring themes of health and healing, and will be moderated by retired physician and Field Hall board member Dr. Mark Fischer. In the evening, Executive Director Steve Raider-Ginsburg will moderate a discussion with Mulondo and a special guest from Peninsula Behavioral Health.

• Luke Bulla, a longtime member of Lyle Lovett’s Large Band, will perform at Concerts in the Woods in Coyle from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and The Palindrome at Eaglemount Cidery in Port Townsend at 7:30 p.m. Sunday.

Saturday’s concert will be in the Laurel B. Johnson Community Center, 923 Hazel Point Road, Coyle. Admission is by donation only. Suggested amount is $20.

Sunday’s concert will be at 1893 S. Jacob Road in Port Townsend. Doors will open at 7 p.m. Tickets are $20 in advance or $25 at the door. To order online, go to https://www.ticket storm.com/e/28625/t/. The concert is hosted by Rainshadow Recording and Concerts.

• Jane Austen Tea, hosted by the Port Angeles Community Players Theatrical Society, will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Fellowship Hall of the First United Methodist Church, 110 E. Seventh St. in Port Angeles.

Tickets are $35 per person and can be purchased at www.pa communityplayers.org.

As this is a formal event celebrating Austen, guests are encouraged to wear their nicest hat, organizers said.

• “Beauty and the Beast” will be performed by the Port Angeles High School Thespian Society tonight through Sunday.

The show will be at the high school’s Performing Arts Center, 304 E. Park Ave. in Port Angeles.

Admission is $10 for adults, $8 for students and $5 for children 10 and younger. Performances will be at 7 p.m. tonight and Saturday, plus a 2 p.m. show on Sunday.

• “Superstars of the High Baroque,” will be at 3 p.m. Saturday at the Quimper Grange hall at 1219 Corona Ave. in Port Townsend. Doors open at 2:30 p.m.

It’s the second of three concerts in the “Early Music at the Grange” series. Tickets are $20 at the door. Masking is requested to protect performers.

• Sequim Community Orchestra will perform at 7 p.m. Saturday.

Admission is free to the concert at Trinity United Methodist Church, 100 S. Blake Ave. in Sequim. It is the first by the adult orchestra for the 2023-24 season.

The orchestra is a group of people from various musical abilities and life stages. This year, several local students joined the orchestra; some of them are products of the Sequim Community Youth Orchestra, some are new to the area, and some students attend Port Angeles High School. The rest of the orchestra includes adults who are lifetime musicians and others who haven’t touched their instruments in decades.

Impressions, a curated exhibition of printmaking at Field Hall Gallery, is on display through Feb. 4.

The Field Hall Gallery, at 201 W. Front St., Port Angeles, is open to the public on Fridays from noon to 4 p.m. and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The gallery also welcomes visitors one hour before most Field Hall Presents events.

American Association of University Women, Port Townsend branch, will hear a presentation by Rosalee Walz, the chairperson of the Chemakum Tribal Council, at 10 a.m. Saturday.

The branch meets at the Port Townsend Elks Club, 555 Otto St.

Walz is working with others to re-learn the almost lost language of her tribe.

Dino Day, sponsored by the Jefferson County Historical Society and the Burke Museum of Natural History and Culture, is planned from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday.

The Burke Museum’s BurkeMobile will come to the Jefferson Museum of Art and History, 540 Water St., for a free dig in program.

The program discusses the geologic origins of the Earth; plate tectonics and continental drift; how fossils provide clues for paleontologists; and exhibits of creatures from the Paleozoic, Mesozoic and Cenozoic eras.

The historical society will display some of the fossils from its collection as well.

Dinosaur costumes are encouraged.
