Winter care, feeding in garden the next Backyard Birding series topic

SEQUIM — The Backyard Birding series continues with “Winter Care and Feeding in the Garden” at 10 a.m. Saturday.

The class will be at the Dungeness River Audubon Center, 2151 W. Hendrickson Road.

Hosted by members of the Olympic Peninsula Audubon Society, the 10-class series offers information about observing and protecting wild bird life in the region.

Presented by Christie Lassen of Wild Birds Unlimited, Saturday’s class covers general bird feeding methods — including types of feeders and various feeds designed to attract specific bird species, especially those species wintering over in the region.

Lassen will describe clean feeding and watering techniques to promote healthy, thriving bird populations while discouraging unwelcome rodents.

She will address the specific needs of the Anna’s Hummingbird species, which has started making the Pacific Northwest home throughout the year.

Backyard Birding can be taken either as individual classes or in a series.

The cost of each session is $5. Admission is free for anyone younger than 18.

For participants completing five sessions in the series, Olympic Peninsula Audubon Society offers a free, one-year membership.
