Wings of Freedom Tour leaves Port Angeles today

PORT ANGELES — Today is the last day the public can view four World War II-era airplanes at Fairchild International Airport.

A B-17 Flying Fortress, B-24 Liberator, B-25 Mitchell and P-51 Mustang fighter will be on view at the airport from 9 a.m. to noon today. The planes landed Wednesday for the Wings of Freedom Tour, which comes every other year to Port Angeles.

Members of the public can view the classic warbirds up close or walk through the heavy bombers.

The cost of entry to the Collings Foundation’s living history display is $15 for adults and $5 for children 12 and younger.

Half-hour flights on the B-25 Mitchell “Tondelayo” are available for $400.

Half-hour flights on the B-17 Flying Fortress “Nine-O-Nine” or B-24 Liberator “Witchcraft” are $450 per person.

Flight training with stick time on the P-51 Mustang “Betty Jane” fighter is $2,200 for 30 minutes or $3,200 for one hour.

Because the Collings Foundation is a nonprofit, paid flights are tax-deductible.

Wings of Freedom made previous stops in Port Angeles in 2003, 2004, 2005, 2007, 2009, 2011, 2013 and 2015.

The theme for this year’s stop is “Salute to Veterans,” Wings of Freedom area coordinator Alan Barnard has said.
