Wild Berry Pickers to perform bluegrass, folk

PORT TOWNSEND — The Port Townsend Friends Meeting will host a benefit concert featuring the Wild Berry Pickers, a band specializing in bluegrass and folk music, at 7 p.m. Saturday at the Friends Meetinghouse.

Admission will be a suggested donation of $5 to $50 at the meetinghouse, 1841 Sheridan St. No one will be turned away for inability to pay.

A dessert social is planned at 7 p.m., with the concert starting at 7:30 p.m.

The Wild Berry Pickers are composed of five siblings: Alex, Meigan, Jason, Kailee and Leianna Kunz, who hail from Port Townsend.

Their renown has increased in the region as a result of their recent participation in Stars of Tomorrow and television coverage by KING-TV news.

Before getting into this genre of music, all five played violin and were taught classical music with the Suzuki approach.

Now playing violin, mandolin, guitar, ukulele and banjo, this foursome has expanded well beyond a conventional training — even incorporating a tub bass that one of their many local teachers donated. Bluegrass is now their strength and an audience’s delight, according to a news release.

The meetinghouse concerts are a benefit to raise money for the loan on the Friends Meetinghouse.
