‘Whale of an Art Show,’ anniversary Art Rock sound off tonight

PORT ANGELES — The Whale of an Art Show at the Heatherton Gallery now has 21 pieces, said Sky Heatherton, proprietor.

The show has work from Ocean Shores, Forks, Port Angeles, Sequim and Port Townsend at the gallery at The Landing mall at 115 E. Railroad Ave. The two-month show will continue through May.

“Quite diverse pieces,” Heatherton said. “Watercolors, block prints, oils, ceramics and acrylics are represented,” she said.

In addition to the whale show, three artists are featured this month and next at the gallery: Sally Cays of Sequim, Julie Senf of Port Angeles and Lynn Thompson of Forks.

A reception is planned from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. today.

“Our gallery members are looking forward to greeting the entrants and visitors that will be discovering the gallery for the first time.”

“We will also be celebrating the 80th birthday of Thomas East, co-owner of the gallery,” Heatherton said.

A special drawing will take place at 7:30 p.m.

Cays is an award-winning watercolorist known for her floral pieces, Heatherton said, adding that Cays “always has a waiting list for her classes.”

Senf is self-taught. Watercolors are her focus. “She paints with humor and is starting to have people collect her art,” Heatherton said.

Thompson works in wood. “Exotic woods and makes the unique grains mesmerizing,” Heatherton said.

2nd Friday Art Rock

Also planned today is the 2nd Friday Art Rock at 9 p.m. at Bar N9ne, 229 W. First St.

The event turns 8 tonight. The anniversary 2FAR event will feature local band Three Too Many and a local artist face-off between Sarah Tucker and Jeff Tocher.

The $3 cover charge will help support the musicians and artist.

“Three Too Many rocks the hits that make you nod your head knowingly,” said Dan Lieberman, 2nd Friday Art Rock spokesman.

“Modern rock is the best descriptor, but their covers span blues, alternative, rock and more.”

From earlier successes in Bellingham and Seattle bands, the members came together on the North Olympic Peninsula a few years ago. Sharon Thompson is on vocals. Mike Maxwell plays mouth harp. Jeff Clark performs slide guitar and the Anderson brothers lay down the rhythm section.

They play “that full-band sound that makes you want to dance,” Lieberman said.

Tucker was the original 2FAR artist-in-residence coordinator, and Tocher is the current artist-in-residence coordinator for 2FAR.

“Who will win the showdown when they face each other and draw?” Lieberman asked.
